Ear infection

Well, I guess I'm spoiling the ending but as you can tell from the title, Callan has her first ear infection as well as her first sickness. I feel like we have been to the Dr. a lot during her 7 months (today, exactly) but mostly it was for the weight gain issues. Otherwise, she has been lucky to avoid any sickness. Anyway, she has had a runny nose since last Thursday. I even called the Dr. before going to lunch on Friday to make sure she wasn't contagious. We have been using the humidifier and putting Vick's VapoRub on her feet at night to try to manage the cold. She has also been snorty when breathing (yes, I know she is a snorty kind of kid anyway, but this is extra snorty). So today when I used the aspirator, my findings were green so I decided to call the doctor. The nurse asked me all kinds of questions about her symptoms, many of which I couldn't answer specifically. Does she have a cough? Well, she has recently developed an attention grabbing, look at me cough so I don't know if it is real or not. Is she fussy? Well, maybe a little but she is also teething so how do we know? Plus, Callan's fussy isn't anything compared to some other kids. She is still very calm while fussy so it is hard to even call her fussy. After the many questions, she told me that she would feel better if the Dr. saw her since the runny nose had been going on for a week and because of her age. So today, against my wishes, me and C went to the sick clinic for the first time to see Dr. Colvard. The whole time I was in there, I felt stupid for being there because she was in a great mood. I'm not sure I've ever seen her laugh that much. But they insisted we come so we did. He didn't do a whole lot but did look in her ears and after cleaning them out several times, decided she had an ear infection in her right ear. My heart just broke. Not only did I feel bad for Callan, but I felt bad because I hadn't acted on it sooner. I had never heard that a runny nose and fussiness could be an ear infection. But apparently it can be! So he gave her an antibiotic and sent us on our way. I scooped her up and held her tight and cuddled her extra special tonight before putting her down. I feel so bad for her! I'm just glad they made us come in so now we can fix the problem. He said if she wasn't better by Monday to call them back so that makes me feel good that it should be gone soon! I am impressed that we made it 7 months without any problems to amount to anything! Happy 7 month b'day C!

P.S. She weighs 12 lbs. 12 ounces. She gained 5 ounces in 16 days. Her younger, curvier cousin, Carley, weighs 10 lbs. 12 ounces. It seems as though Carley may be passing on clothes to Callan soon! The strawberry outfits that the girls were wearing in the post below...Callan wore the 3 month one in that picture (Carley wore the NB) and then we left the 3 month with Carley and she wore it the next day! Ha!

  • Ear infections are no fun for sure. Cooper had them constantly from about 6 months until 14 mths when he got tubes. Obviously that was extreme, but I say that because it is so difficult to tell when they have ear infections, especially kids that arent real fussy about that sort of thing. I would take him in and his ears would be clear and then days later, he would have an ear infection. I'm glad she's doing well and gaining weight and all. She is adorable.

  • LOVED your wording on "my findings were green" (probabaly had to think about how to word that one, huh?) and her curvier cousin. Carley and I would like to always be referred to as "curvier" than you and Callan, please. We like that choice of wording. lol So sorry for the infection but know she's feeling better by now!!

  • I am glad she is feeling better. I know how you feel about the guilt from not thinking you should go to the doc. I was the same way and then when I got there Jack was smiling and wanting to play with all the other kids. When the doc came in, that's when we found out he had RSV. I guess its always best to just get it checked out;). Hope she keeps feeling better!

  • I guess since I was gone this weekend I was out of the loop. I hope Callan is feeling better!!! My nephew had a terrible time with ear infections, so I know that it can be tough. Hopefully she's getting better :)

  • Well, she is taking after her Daddy! For all of you who don't know...I screamed for the first 6 months of my life and then I had my first set of tubes...at 6 months. All in all I had 5 sets of tubes in my ears and countless ear infections and I have burst my ear drums 4 or 5 times. I guess she gets it honest! I hope she doesn't have them as bad as I did!!

  • I know you don't know me from Adam, but I found your blog from scarletts, and am interested in how you make your baby food. I have a 3mth old, and was thinking about getting a head start on making some, if it last that long. Please let me know.
